Optimizing Your Website Images

If you’ve surfed the web you probably noticed that images are frequently a more powerful draw than content. Images are such a huge component that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) hinges on carefully selected images that have good alt and title attributes.

Apart from getting good rankings in image search results, there is also the importance of making your website accessible to the visually impaired. By adding alt text and image descriptions, barriers are lifted and more people can access your content.

So what are these attributes and how are they different from each other?

  1. Alt (alternative text) – a brief textual explanation of an image, used in the coding of digital graphics online and in digital files; alt text is not visible on websites unless the image does not appear.
  2. Title (image description) – a detailed explanation of an image that provides textual access to visual content; most often used for digital graphics online and in digital files; can be used as alt text in coding to provide access to more complete information.

These are also known as alt tag and title tag: the alt tag is used by screen readers, which are browsers used by blind and visually impaired people. These screen readers tell them what is on the image by reading the alt tag. The title attribute is shown as a tooltip when you hover over the element.

According to an article by Perkins School for the Blind, the following features should be included in the image descriptions when applicable:

  • Colors
  • Names of people
  • Animals
  • Emotions
  • Surroundings
  • Placement of objects
  • Placement of text

The bottom line is that giving your images good alt attributes strengthens your message and increases the accessibility of your website. It is a key component to SEO, one that the success of your website depends on.
